1. Somnath Jyotirlinga – Gujarat
Known as the “Eternal Shrine,” Somnath is believed to be the first Jyotirlinga. Located on the Arabian Sea coast, it symbolizes resilience and devotion, having been rebuilt multiple times after invasions. The temple’s divine architecture and evening light-and-sound show are major attractions.
2. Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga – Andhra Pradesh
Located in Srisailam on the banks of the Krishna River, this Jyotirlinga represents the union of Shiva and Parvati. Surrounded by dense forests and hills, the temple radiates peace and is revered as one of the most powerful Shakti Peethas as well.
3. Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga – Madhya Pradesh
Situated in Ujjain, this is the only Jyotirlinga facing south. Known for its Bhasma Aarti, performed at dawn, Mahakaleshwar represents Shiva’s supreme power over time (Mahakaal). The temple holds deep significance in Hindu astrology and spirituality.
4. Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga – Madhya Pradesh
Located on an island shaped like the sacred “Om” in the Narmada River, Omkareshwar is known for its serene environment and spiritual energy. The town’s ghats, bridges, and river views add to the divine experience.
5. Kedarnath Jyotirlinga – Uttarakhand
Nestled in the Himalayas, Kedarnath is one of India’s most revered pilgrimage sites and part of the Chardham Yatra. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the ancient stone temple stands at high altitude and is accessible via a scenic trek.
6. Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga – Maharashtra
Located in the Sahyadri hills, Bhimashankar is surrounded by dense forests and is the source of the Bhima River. The temple features a peaceful natural setting and is an important wildlife and trekking destination as well.
7. Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga – Uttar Pradesh
Located in Varanasi, the spiritual capital of India, this Jyotirlinga is believed to grant liberation (moksha). The temple stands near the holy Ganga River and attracts millions of devotees seeking blessings and peace.
8. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga – Maharashtra
Situated near Nashik, Trimbakeshwar is the source of the sacred Godavari River. The temple’s unique feature is its three lingas representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. It is also a major center for religious rituals and ceremonies.
9. Vaidyanath (Baidyanath) Jyotirlinga – Jharkhand
Also known as Baba Dham, this temple is associated with Lord Shiva’s role as a healer (Vaidya). Devotees believe that worship here can cure ailments and fulfill wishes. It’s especially crowded during the Shravani Mela.
10. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga – Gujarat
Located near Dwarka, this Jyotirlinga symbolizes protection from evil and negative energies. The tall Shiva statue, serene surroundings, and proximity to the Arabian Sea make it a peaceful spiritual stop.
11. Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga – Tamil Nadu
Situated on Pamban Island, Rameshwaram is deeply connected to Lord Rama’s Ramayana journey. The temple is known for its long corridors, sacred water tanks, and its significance as a major moksha-destined pilgrimage site.
12. Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga – Maharashtra
Located near Ellora Caves, it is the smallest of the Jyotirlinga temples yet holds immense spiritual power. Built in red stone, the temple features beautiful carvings and a peaceful environment.
